Do not do it sales is not reliable the pay sometimes doesn't outweigh the hours. I would rather get a degree in accounting crunching numbers than to continue on this horrible job choice. |

I have been in and out of the travel agency business for over 25 years. I received a Geography degree with a specialization in travel consulting and planning. For many years there was a great demand for my career. In the last 10 years with the internet being so popular and 9/11 events, the travel agency business has steadily declined. There is a myth that travel agents get all types of free trips. The may have been the case in the 1980's and 1990's, but no longer. I would not recommend this career as there is not a demand for this job and the pay is traditionally low. Would I do it over again if I had the chance? Yes. I have performed other jobs/careers in the business sector. What I enjoy the most is interacting with the customers and trying to solve difficult travel itineraries or someone stranded at an airport. What would I tell people that they have not heard about? Well, the pay is very low compared to other jobs. |

I major in Travel Industry Management in college so being a travel agent was a good job to have after college. Working as a travel agent has its ups and downs. Travel agents does mostly sales, promoting hotels, resort, car rental, attractions. So, if you are not good at sales, then I would not recommend this career choice. If you are good at sales, you can make good money from commissions. The biggest benefit of being a travel agent is that you get to visit or try out all the new attractions, hotels, resorts before many people do. Most of the time, your trip are either discounted or free of charge. The down side to this career is the inconsistency in the amount of money you can make from one month to another. Travel industry rely heavily on the economy or another country's economy. So when the economy is not doing well, then nobody travels, sales drop, commission drops, amount of money take home may not be the same. A lot of time, small travel agency would closed down. |

This business is really bad. The airlines get to change their rules whenever they feel like it and constantly try to make you pay for everything. They also try to make you look bad to the clients by not charging them penalties to change something which we would have to do or they debit us. They pay no commision any more. So the only way your company can make any money is by charging a service fee to your clients. I just can't understand why someone would pay a service fee rather than just book their stuff online themselves. They tell you that you have to charge X amount of money for a flight but then they offer the same flight on their website cheaper. They do not give any free tickets anymore either. The best part of being a travel agent is the hotel perks.
I would say that within the next 5 years there will be no more Travel agents |

I love being a travel agent and would recommend it to anyone who likes helping people. It gives me an opportunity to help people plan some very important moments in there lives. I am always researching a new location and learning something new. The most important requirement for being a travel agent is knowing your geography. The travel industry is constantly changing and offering new opportunities. If you are considering this career finding a agency that will let you train within their reservation system is the best way to get your foot in the door. |

Travel Agent is the closest thing on this list I guess. While I'm not personally a travel agent, I work for a Tour Operator that creates and runs the product of that Travel Agents sell all around the world. Great company to work in, but the pay isn't all that great. Benifits are pretty good though(they sent me to Australia & New Zealand a few months back for 2 weeks). |
