Legal Studies, General:
Well the major was definitely interesting but after college the work isn't that inspiring. So I just joined the Army instead of working in a law firm, which I did try and hated deeply.
I felt the major had a lot to offer in terms of developing a better understand of the world. It definitely made me think, which all I wanted out of college anyway. I knew right out of the gate that I would not be sitting in an office my whole life. |

Tax Law / Taxation (LLM, JSD / SJD):
I received my JD in 1980, my LlM in Taxation in 1981, worked as an associate for 1 year, and have had my own law office for 27 years.
Here's some things you might not learn until you're out of law school. First, your studies in law school and the way you balance your life in law school will probably carry over into life after law school. In my case, I was a "c" student (part of the 80% of my class) so I studied 60, 70, 80 hours a week. I had no life, no balance.
When I graduated and started my law office, I worked 80, 90, 100+ hours per month, for 8 months, until I got sick. Then I reduced my hours to 60, 70 hours per week.
Here's one observation - are you willing to compete with this kind of person? If not, you may lose your market or your case. If you are, do you have the family to support such a person? Then, what kind of person will you become? Did you want to get married, have children, and the rest of the American dream - that all gets squeased out.
I wish I took a closer look at the types of careers previous classmates at my law school ended up with, and then decide if that's what I wanted to do. In my case, out of a class of 65, maybe 45 are working for the state and local government, I know of 3 in private practice, and the rest have left law or died.
I currently enjoy the perks of a successful law practice - honor and respect whereever I go and financial flexibility that few people enjoy
Law is not for everyone, but those well suited to it are to be truly congradulated. If you have an interest in law, and you're not afraid of hard work, then law may be for you. I wish you good fortune. |
