Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs, Other:
Communication skills are essential in almost every field of professionalism. In my communication major I learned to debate, influence and clearly present issues both in speech and written form. I gained listening skills, critical thinking skills, and conflict resolution techniques.
Yes, I would choose this major again. It has been extremely helpful in my work as a counselor and educator, as well as making my postgraduate classes easier.
I find little cons regarding a communiction degree other than as a stand alone batchelors degree it may have limited income potential. The pro side, however, is image the income benefit to an attorney, a politician, or business person who has these skills. |

Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication, Other:
Studying Corporate Communications in college was the best possible decision I could have made. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in Public Relations or Advertising as a career major in a related field if possible. While it is possible to break into the industry without a specific degree, having studied the specifics has been invaluable to me since graduating. My particular school placed a great importance on group projects with tight deadlines and real world scenarios. This has greatly helped me in the corporate world, and prepared me well to be a Public Relations professional. Studying Corporate Communications gives you a background in a lot of subject matters, as it is essential to understand a product or concept before promoting and this kept me from ever getting bored with my work. On the other hand, that work often calls for long hours and stressful deadlines so it is important to be passionate about your decision. My advice to anyone considering majoring in any Communications related subject is to really think about your career goals before deciding on a specific major. I have seen many students confuse PR with Advertising or Event Planning and ending up unhappy with their choice. |

Advertising:
Advertising was a fun major to study. I found the classes really interesting and had a good time coming up with slogans and ads of my own. However, it is a very competitive field, and I don't think that I'm as devoted as other people in the industry. I'm going back to school to get a law degree; Advertising wasn't the right choice for me. It's great for creative people who truly love it; my advice is to make sure that you're really devoted to the field of Advertising before deciding to major in it. |
