Tips: Do it for the love of acting not because you think you might make a lot of money, otherwise you'll probably be disappointed. Make sure you have a life apart from your acting career (a good place to live, friends, a steady but flexible "day job") so you're not just sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. Be prepared - when the phone does ring, you don't want to be scrambling for headshots or resumes or reels or monologues.
I would recommend this career for people who can't imagine doing anything else. Or, even if they can imagine other things, they'd still choose to act because they love it so much.
I DID do it over again and this is what I chose! So yes, I would absolutely choose this career again...and this time I'd choose it earlier in life!!
PROS: creative, artistic, challenging, something different every day
CONS: unpredictable work/cash flow, you're only one fish in a very big pond
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: If you don't have an agent, think about getting a really good personal manager. There are lots of auditions that you can't get in on without an agent but a really good manager will have good relationships with lots of casting directors & he/she will be able to submit you for parts you would have almost no chance of even being considered for on your own. |
