Going into University for Aerospace Engineering I was hesitant as to what jobs I would be able to find in the future. Then, as University progressed I learnt that the beautiful thing about Engineering is that you can apply your knowledge to a lot of different fields other than your own. For example, my first job I worked more as a Mechanical Engineer. Then, as I gained experience I was lucky to get a job working at Boeing. They enjoyed my prescence as I had the mind and training of an Aerospace Engineer, but, I also had work experience as a Mechanical Engineer. So this was an excellent position as I could apply knowledge from both areas. I think that in the near future there will be an exceptionally higher demand for Aerospace Engineers as Aviation companies look to the future for more efficient/streamlined designs, drone aircraft for the military and now civilian space flight. Interesting times are ahead in our world and the most evolving seems to be transportation. I definitely recommend taking a look at Aerospace Engineering as it is a very interesting field with many opportunities to spread your knowledge in Mechanical, Structural, Electrical and Mechatronics Engineering. The only downside that people seem to dwell on is the lack of jobs where your title is specifically "Aerospace Engineer". This is untrue as most Aerospace Engineering jobs have unique titles. This is a very interesting field and if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing, my passion is with Aerospace Engineering.

This review is written from a narrow perspective within the Aerospace Engineer discipline. Specifically, Avionics Engineering is addressed with this review.

Avionics Engineers come in 4 flavors; hardware, software, systems, and mechanical. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these.

Most positions are occupied by software engineers that develop embedded applications in C/C++. Lots of jobs are available in Software, but these jobs can easily be shifted to off-shore developers.

Electronics Hardware Design Engineers with good experience are hard to find. Especially engineers with RF experience. Many new grads are focusing on digital design and are lacking in analog and RF courses. If you are good, you can always find a good, well paying job.

Mechanical Engineers perform the electro-mechanical packaging design. Lots of CAD and thermal analysis experience will help you land one of the few jobs available.

Systems engineering is a growing field. These folks integrate customer needs and industry regulations into requirements design documents. These documents are used by the other three disciplines as guidelines to perform their detail designs. The Systems Engineers then perform testing to make sure the product is designed to those requirements.

All of these fields allow you to work with a group of intelligent peers. It is terrific opportunity for learning while being paid well.

The drawback is avionics and aerospace jobs fluctuate with the economy. There tends to be a feast or famine cycle to this industry.

My advice is to get a degree in electrical engineering or computer science/engineering and you will have many options open to you. I would do it over again and I would recommend this career. It is good because you have a lot of options if you get a degree in engineering. You can work at a big company which offers many benefits and job security. The cons are you are working at a desk and if you don't like engineering, it could be a very job. What you should know is that in school engineering is much more difficult than the actual job is.
