I am a research scientist working with viruses and I love what I do. In order to do my job, you first need a bachelor's degree in some biological science (preferably biochemistry and/or molecular biology), followed by an advanced degree (masters, Ph.D.). Given the chance to start over, I would still pick this career as I have always had an interest in infectious disease and pathogens (especially viruses).
I would recommend this career if you are inquisitive, patient, and have a passion for science, biology, or the love of life itself. It isn't easy and rarely yields clear answers, so the pay-off doesn't always equal the work you put into it. This is also true for the pay - biologists aren't the best-paid workers, but we are certainly the happiest because we are doing something we love to do.
The hours can be flexible depending on your boss, but because so much rests on your progress, this can also mean very long hours (for instance, yesterday I worked a 21-hour day). But because I am doing something I love and helping humanity in general, it really doesn't bother me. |
