If you are interested in going into Education, you HAVE to like working with young people. That sounds silly, but there are quite a few people who go into teaching and leave quickly because they don't like working with young people. Yes, I do recommend this career and yes if I had it to do over again I would choose education. I have had the opportunity to learn many new and different types of software, network administration, hardware, etc. in order to teach in a computer lab and to teach the newest and best software and techniques. I have had the opportunity to travel and work with teachers from all across my state along with the department of public instruction in my state.
What you don't hear about is all of the politics that go on behind the scenes. It seems like that if it would make sense to do something one way that most school systems will do things the other way. The school board and county commissioners are always fighting over money because the commissioners don't trust the school board to spend it appropriately and the ones caught in the middle are the teachers and the students. Also, the federal act "No Child Left Behind" wow talk about hog tying a teacher. The NCLB basically states that if a child doesn't do well in their class it is the teachers fault. But, what about the child that comes in and tells you to your face that they didn't study or do their homework. It's still the teachers fault according to NCLB. What about the parent who tells the child, "I don't have a high school diploma and you don't need one either." How is a teacher supposed to combate that attitude from a parent, especially when the parent disrespects the teacher in front of the child.
But, overall I love teaching. I love the moments when that proverbial light bulb goes off in a student's mind when they finally grasp a concept that they have been struggling with. I love when the students ask about my family and tell me that they thought about us over a break. I love the moments when a former student comes back and shares with me how what I taught them has helped further their career. Teaching is an extremely frustrating job, but it is also the most rewarding job out there. |
