I became a chemical engineer because I was interested in math and science. I also learned while in college that it was the highest-paying career in engineering, at least out of college. If you choose to become a chemical engineer, the most important thing to understand is what you will actually be doing in your career - your roles, responsibilities, the kind of environments you will work in, the kind of people you will work with, etc. The best way to accomplish this (and get a jump start on your career) is to take a co-operative position at a company where you will be exposed to the aforementioned things. This will also give you a chance to learn and ask questions of experienced chemical engineers. I did not do any of these, and I regret it since it put me behind and took me that long to catch up.
The career itself can be rewarding from a technical standpoint. There are always technical challenges that demand creativity, know-how, intuition, ability to compute, etc. There is also plenty of opportunity to work with a varied cross-section of people - you will undoubtedly work with all levels of education and responsibility.
The negatives: depends on the position and industry. Health and safety are factors in many factories. Working odd hours when there is a time-sensitive project is another one, but that is common for most professional positions. Catering to the whims of those that actually run the factories can be frustrating at times.
The pay is excellent. |
