A lot of people think that copywriting would be a rather dull job, but I love it. It affords you relatively regular hours (as opposed to reporting) so you can make plans with your family or friends.

Copywriting isn't terribly hard. It's important, however, that you have a fairly firm grasp on spelling and grammar. You don't have to be an expert, but you should have above-average knowledge. A must-read is Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. That goes for anyone interested in any facet of writing, not just copywriters.

I wouldn't go into this career. When I first started, wages were good and I could work a 40 hour week with very little overtime. Now, as a writer, almost all of our work has been outsourced overseas, where people are willing to do our job for 1/10th the amount we were getting paid. Now, we either have to settle for getting paid $3 per article or else go into another career area. So please, if you do choose to be a writer, at least get your Master's Degree. That way you can still work teachig English and writing at the Community College level and have some income coming in.

It's a tough way to make a living. Non-writers often think it is easy and fun -- something they might like to try someday. Plus, everyone is an editor. Your copy will be critiqued and changed often, not always for the better. There is plenty of competition and very few make much money at writing. I don't know how to do anything else, so here I am. On the plus side, it can be personally rewarding to craft a piece that really works.
