Being an executive assistant is an excellent way to get a start in your career. It provides a taste for business and allows you to make contacts and learn from a variety of people, while relieving you of the pressure that is associated with being a first time manager or director. I view this position as a stepping stone for young professionals, and think that spending more than just a few years as an executive assistant would lead to boredom. If you are currently interviewing for an executive assistant position, it is okay to ask if there are opportunties for growth within the company.
I would love to say that I enjoy my career at this point, but I don't. I think it is a combination of working for a horrible company and the nature of the position itself. I constantly find myself wondering how much longer I can hold out,spending most of my life in a sterile office environment. My job is relatively joyless, and I suspect that the people I work with feel the same way too. Otherwise they would be inclined to say "good morning" or "hello" to each other. The best comparison I can think of is Joe's office environment in "Joe vs. the Volcano". Have you seen it? Yes, the fluorescent lights are sucking the juice out of my eyeballs. Yes, part of me is dying. Is that descriptive enough?
I love what I do. I am able to do something different everyday. The most important thing is that you enjoy the company and the people you work for. Also, do not limit yourself; learn as much as you can about the business your company is involved in. Take on as many diverse tasks as possible. If you do not learn in your job, you are only limiting yourself. The best part about this job is that you can work in just about any field with the same skill set. I would definitely do this type of work given the choice all over again.
