The Clothing, Accessory & General Merchandise Stores sector groups (1) Clothing Stores, (2) Shoe Stores, (3) Jewelry, Luggage, and Leather Goods Stores, (4) Department Stores, and (5) General Merchandise Stores.
Clothing Stores are primarily engaged in retailing new clothing, including men's, women's, and children's clothing and accessories.
Shoe Stores are primarily engaged in retailing all types of new footwear (except hosiery and specialty sports footwear, such as golf shoes, bowling shoes, and spiked shoes).
Jewelry, Luggage, and Leather Goods Stores are primarily engaged in retailing new jewelry (except costume jewelry); new silver and plated silverware; new watches and clocks; and new luggage with or without a general line of new leather goods and accessories, such as hats, gloves, handbags, ties, and belts.
Department Stores typically have separate departments for various merchandise lines, such as apparel, jewelry, home furnishings, and linens, each with separate cash registers and sales associates. Some Department stores may also have central customer checkout areas, generally in the front of the store.
General Merchandise Stores retail new general merchandise from fixed point-of-sale locations. Establishments in this industry are unique in that they have the equipment and staff capable of retailing a large variety of goods from a single location. This includes a variety of display equipment and staff trained to provide information on many lines of products. These establishments retail a general line of new merchandise, such as apparel, automotive parts, dry goods, hardware, groceries, housewares or home furnishings, and other lines in limited amounts, with none of the lines predominating. This industry includes establishments known as warehouse clubs, superstores or supercenters primarily engaged in retailing a general line of groceries in combination with general lines of new merchandise, such as apparel, furniture, and appliances. |
