Going to school for this is hardwork, but in the end you'll have many different jobs to keep you busy and not become bored of your job. If i was able to do it all over again i would become a statistican because that's the area that i really excel and like to do. Statistics has a really good job outlook because they are always needed.
Well, I studied materials science and worked as a process engineer in the semiconductor industry. The starting salary was very good and international travel was fun as a single person. My job started out in the USA and then moved to Singapore, now China. I did not move, so now I am no longer a semiconductor process engineer.
The lesson: if you want to be an engineer, stick with the "classics" of mechanical/electrical/chemical/or the $$$ or computer. Keep your qualifications as broad as possible.
I'm a Process Control Metallurgist. I love that my job pays very well. However it is on a 12 hour swing shift which I do not mind but many people dislike it. It is also very interesting seeing as I am a thinker. My job mainly consists of troubleshooting problems that occur at an iron ore plant. This involves obsevering the process control system and trying to anticipate problems that may come up. However if I am unable to anticipate the problem then it is my responsibility to figure out what caused it. So if you are the type of person who likes to analyze computer data and trends and is good at figuring out problems you would most likely enjoy this job.
