I have spent many years as a lighting technician, operator, and programmer for live music and other live events. I love the combination of creative and technical skills that are involved in the job, and I have found it very rewarding in the travel department as well, doing national tours and working on cruise ships. The travel can also be a very negative side as well, once you are ready to settle down and live normal days and nights at home with a family. Working in this field without travel limits you a great deal in payscale and the size of events you can work on. Unless you move to Vegas or aspire to Broadway in NY, you are generally limited to small local companies doing smaller shows or nightclubs, and therefore the payscale that goes with those. But if you are equipped to travel most of your career, the money is great for the time spent in the learning curve, and the excitement never stops if you choose your jobs well!
