I have been a medical assistant for 3 years, and only months into performing the job, realized that it was not enough. Medical Assistants are taught a lot of things, but the reality of the job is that they do vital signs over and over all day long, play secretary to dozens of phone calls/messages per day, and do basic data entry. It is not glamourous or rewarding as the commercials say. If anyone wants to consider a medical assistant job, I would STRONGLY encourage them to look into both public and private colleges (such as a community college or private vocational school)to go straight to LVN or RN.
Most people go into medical assisting with visions of true nursing in their head. That is not the case as most clinics have numerous restrictions on what M.A.s can and cannot do, regardless of your training and experience. The other downside - working in a CLINIC (not hospital) where LVNs and RNs are employed can be interesting as they get paid anywhnere from 8 to 20 dollars/hour more for virtually the same job other than they can administer mixed medications (such as Rocephin) and start IVs, which they rarely do unless they work in an urgent care setting. Also, Doctors are used to working with licensed personnel when they do their hospital rounds, so when they ask you to do something that is not within your scope of practice, they get frustrated or sometimes angry with you. Some doctors will talk down to you, even though you're an important part of day-to-day office function and you're the continuity that the patients get to know and like.
Don't waste your time - Medical Assistants are a "dime a dozen". You'll only make 10-13 dollars per hour right out of approximately 9 months of school, have to fight tooth and nail for jobs, and if you went another 6-9 months, you could be an LVN and make double the money and do more of what your heart dreams of. |

The word "salary" comes from salarium, or "salt money" and was used in ancient Rome to describe the wages paid to Roman legionnaires who were compensated in salt. |
