Teaching is a wonderful profession! Not only do you get to help shape the lives of young people, but you have the pleasure of getting to know hundreds of different students each year. Yes, there are ups and downs, as there are with any profession, but as a teacher for 34 years I will tell you that the positives far outweigh the negatives. If I had it to do all over again I would definitely choose this career. The best advice I can give to prospective teachers is.....be firm but fair....keep an open mind...have a sense of humor and most of all let the students know that you truly care about them.
I am a 6th grade math teacher. I love it !!! Middle school students get a bum rap; they are exciting, inquisitive, ever-changing and a real joy. I teach one advanced class (7th grade math for 6th graders) and four regular 6th grade math classes. It's rewarding. It's challenging. It's great !!!
I never thought that I would want to teach middle school, but I have found that I absolutely love it! People who are considering this age group need to have a lot of patience and determination. Teaching teenagers can be very challenging and rewarding all at the same time. Many times my students will challenge my authority and question my knowledge, but this keeps me on my toes! I could teach elementary or highschool, but I just love middle school.
