Recently, I chose to turn my love for photography into a career. Not only did I pursue my dream of making a living as a photographer, I also opened my own photography studio. I had worked in a studio as a photographer for five years before deciding to venture out on my own. It has been full of trials and tribulations as my business has started to gain notariety. My studio is going on its second year and while I am proud of the fact that I had enough courage to start my own small business, I do wish I would have thought things through a little bit more.
Starting your onw studio requires a lot of money. I suggest working from your home at first, if possible. Even sharing the rent of a studio space with a small group of photographers is a possibility. I have found that the best way to advertise is by face to face contact. Portrait Photography has an emotional connection for people and they need to feel comfortable with the person that is going to create their photographs.
From my previous studio experience, I learned that dealing with the public is not always easy. This lesson has not changed one bit. On a recent assignment to photograph a retirement banquet I negelected to draw up a contract. Our terms were in writing, but not signed by both parties. It caused a bit of difficulty when they wanted to change their original request. When working out of the studio on assignment it is imperative that a contract be written and agreed upon by both parties.
In my experience, I have taken beautiful photographs of people only to have them complain. There are some people that you as a photographer simply cannot please. It can be difficult when faced with criticism from people who have never taken a photography class, but the key is to let it go.
The other important lesson I have learned is to be true to your style. Whether you're a photographer, painter, florist, or interior decorator always be true to your style. People hire you because they've seen your work and they like it. Sure its good to stretch your creativity ocassionally, but if you're trying too hard your work will reflect it.
Remember, even though you love what you do you still need to make money. I love taking photographs of people and want to do it as much as I can. At first, I questioned whether my prices for portraits were too high. I wanted to keep my prices low so that I could attract more clients and thus take more photographs. However, when you do nice work you deserve to get paid for your expertise. Keep your prices competitive within the market and do not second guess your value.
Overall, I have met many very nice people and several clients have become friends. I am glad I chose a career in portrait photography. Owning a small business can be very difficult at times and I have learned a great deal from this experience. Luckily, I still enjoy photography. |
