American Univ. is generally a solid school, and a variety of capable departments. Although University officials will tell you otherwise, they "specialize" in political science and public affairs. It's located in a spectacular DC neighborhood and the transportation services are excellent. Additionally, the school is close to a thriving nightlife scene.
It's a very diversified group of students, which tends to help break the monotony of most hum-drum Midwest schools.
The campus is quite average, and the dorms are quite basic. Its location is the real selling point here, especially for anyone looking to work in politics or public service. Access to the Capital is unbeatable.
To be honest, if AU wasn't so close to my home, I would likely have chosen Georgetown. Overall, however, it was a good yet pricey education. |

I attended American University as a Political Science major/Literature minor and had a very positive experience overall. I found that the Political Science department included professors with a variety of viewpoints and experiences, especially different cultures. The school challenged students to think outside of the "box" of upper middle class American existence. The students at American, while almost universally upper middle class and above, came from literally across the globe (some of my first friends at the school came from Switzerland, Western Canada, and France), and added to the eclectic cultural mix. The only drawbacks to the American University experience is the school's unfailingly leftward political bent (and I'm a Democrat), and the lack of a defined alumni base to support new alums as they launhc thier careers. The school resides in the tony northwest corner of Washington DC, only a short Metro or bus ride from the Capitol, Smithsonians, or Georgetown (the area, not the second-rate school!). |
