Students considering attending Transylvania University must think about several things. First, they must realize that Transylvania is a liberal arts college, and as such, students will be required to take several courses outside of their major and to complete a curriculum that includes many different subjects. If the student wants to focus solely on their intended major, this might not be the best school for them; however, if the student wants to be free to explore knowledge outside of their major, this would be a good school.
The student must also know that Transylvania has a very active Greek community and that Greek organizations and functions dominate the social landscape. If Greek life appeals to the student, this would be an excellent choice. If the student is interested in more varied interaction, this school would not be a good choice.
Transylvania is an excellent choice for students who wish to go to medical school, dental school, or pharmacy school. Their acceptance rates are quite high and their preparatory programs are well-respected, especially among local professional schools. Students interested in scientific research might have a more difficult time here, as the research opportunities are few and it is almost always necessary to do things like this at outside institutions.
The education program is highly respected, but enrollment is limited. There are few options for foreign language study here; students who wish to study something other than French, German, or Spanish should probably look at other schools.
Tuition and fees for this private university are quite high, but many students receive some form of financial aid. Students should be aware that some financial aid depends on academic performance, and it may be more difficult to obtain the necessary grades than an incoming student might expect.
The academic program at Transylvania is challenging and interesting, but the social scene can be somewhat restricted. However, there are many opportunities for students to get outside of what is known as the "Transy bubble." While I would probably not choose this school again due to the lack of research opportunities and the over-emphasis on Greek life, I believe that for some students, especially those who want to go to medical school, this college would be a good choice. |
