History, Other:
What can you do with a History major?
Nothing - except teach history to a bunch of deadhead kids who hate history. The kids may hate history, but they have sense enough to know that there are no - repeat NO - jobs for history majors.
I love history. I mostly love the history of common people. I always hated memorizing kings' names, and I got thoroughly bored studying how the rich, famous and privileged lived. But I love the history of the common person. How did they live? What was the technology available to them? What kind of family structure did they have? What were their religious beliefs?
In particular, I love to see the interplay between technology, diplomacy, power, and religion in shaping what people believe about themselves and the world around them.
Example: Before the Korean Conflict, men in Korea walked ahead of their wives, who walked several paces behind in a gesture of deferrence. When the broke out, both sides planted mine fields. The men, walking in front, stepped on the mines and died. Within a few months, the tradition had changed. Now women walked several paces in front of their husbands, in a gesture of deferrence.
Now this little example is interesting - at least to me. It shows human nature. Put together with a lot of other little examples, it shows a trend. I love reading about things like this, and I love the perspective it gives me on people, on politics, and on the news. It even has marginal uses. It makes me a better stock picker, for instance.
But what it does not do is get me a job.
I think history is a good minor for people going into fields such as management, law, psychology, and journalism IF you like the subject.
If I had to do it over again, I would not have majored in history. I would have majored in some awful subject like Nursing or Business Administration that would have given me a high paying job. However, I would have spent a lot of the extra money I made on history books because I enjoy the reading. |

History, General:
If you are considering history as a major, the first requirement is a love of the subject. Most people probably do not understand that history is not a static field. Historians are always arguing about what really happened. A prospective historian should be able to make a pursuasive argument.
I would recommend majoring in history to people that know what they plan to do for employment after college. Though the study of history is good training for the mind, is is not the best major for finding employment. It is good preparation for future lawyers, historians, museum employees, and history teachers.
If I had it to do over again, I would still major in history because I love it. I have found a way to continue using my knowledge by teaching high school history.
The pros of having a history major include an expanded view of the world, and building the skills necessary to make a convincing argument. Historians are often able to find a niche that really fires their imaginations.
One con is that you were probably not prepared for the serious study of history at the high school level. History in college is a massive amount of reading and writing. It is more focused on broad themes instead of small facts. Every college history test I ever took was an essay. If your writing skills are lacking, you should consider remediation at your college or choose another major. |

History, General:
I thoroughly enjoy history, so studying the subject in college was something I am glad I did. I learned alot and feel that knowledge of history can help to give a better perspective on many things in life, like current events, careers, trends and the economy. While I love history and am proud that I have a degree in it, unless you are planning on being a teacher, I would not recommend it as a major. Aside from the general education I got from the major, it didn't really give me any leads on starting a career after graduation. In fact, my current career has absolutely nothing to do with history. I probably would have been better off swapping my major and minor (communication) in terms of job prospects and fields that would have been more accessable to me with a different major. I would say for anybody considering being a history major, they should reconsider and choose something more practical while taking history as a minor so they can gain the knowledge and perspective that learning about our history provides. |
