Pharmacology:
My tips for people considering this major would be to research thoroughly what "pharmcology" is, it's not just about drugs, it entails knowing anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and heavy organic chemistry. I would recommend this field to others who like hard work, in the same vein as medicine, veterinary medicine, etc. Pharmacology is actually a licensed medical doctoral field. I would definitely choose this major again. Pros include fiscal benefits, more research than patient work, and intense study...cons include possibly years of work, running through thousands of compounds to find that one new substance that has any therapeutic effect, long trials, high costs (which you don't pay, but delay your efforts), "red-tape," etc. |

Biology / Biological Sciences, General:
I received my undergraduate degree from University of Michigan. The biology department is divided into MCDB (micro cellular and developmental biolgy) and EEB (evolution and ecological biolgy). I studied general biology. You need to complete 37 credits for the basic biology degree (additional credits are required if you want to pick a speciality from MCDB or EEB). You have to complete basic physics, organic chemistry, general chemistry, general biology and calculus (which also fulfill pre-med requirement). The work load is heavy. Until this day, I think the most difficult class was bio162 (intro to bio). There are a lot of random facts to remember (kind like med school class). You need a good brain and a lot of patient and coffee in order to succeed in that class. The classes will get easier as you advance though. I am not sure if that's the case for other schools. Overall, I think biology is a very good major for students who are interested in science but not sure which particular field he is interested in. Biology covers a broad area of study. For a general biology major, you will have the basic knowledge about things from small scale (microbiology) to large scale (evolution) in biology. The lab work will make you a good scientist later. If I had to do it again, I would still choose biology. I can't really think of any cons about this field. Biology is so applicable in just about anything, from individual cells to animals interaction. Especially for people who want to persue a career in medicine, biology will be very useful. I strongly recommand this major. |

Zoology / Animal Biology:
Zoology majors will work very hard for their grades and will end up with interesting but relatively low-paid careers. If you really love a particular group of animals, spend your free time learning about them, collecting them, or observing them then Zoology is a good major for you. Course work will include lots of memorization, at least two lab courses per semester, math through Calculus, and chemistry through Organic. On the other hand, field work can be as close to home as your back yard or as far off as any continent your organism inhabits. Most zoologists will need to go on for additional degrees, including a Masters, a PhD., or at least a teaching certificate if they plan to get a job in their field. I can't imagine myself having followed any other career, but based on how much work I had to do in my major courses compared to how easy it was for me to get As in my electives, the way in which I have tailored my subsequent employment, and my tendency to want to stay put, I probably would have done better in a major that involves more writing and less field work. |

Biology / Biological Sciences, General:
If a student wanted to consider the biological sciences major at the University of California, Irvine, I would wholly recommend it, but with certain caveats. If you are preparing for a career in research, medicine, or biology in general, it is an excellent major for preparation. The science courses are very rigorous and thorough, so you will be ready for anything any post-grad institution throws at you. Also, it allows for a broad view of what biology has to offer and gives possibilities for labs to conduct undergrad research in, which is essential for getting into various post-grad schools. (It also gives applicants an edge over others in the job market if going to work right after your degree.)
But it is not for everyone: it is intensely competitive (most of the students are pre-med) and requires a lot of work and discipline. It is not easy and not meant to be, so if you cannot handle the challenge, I would not recommend it.
With just a B.S. in this degree, it can be hard to find gainful employment outside of being a lab or company technician (you are also limited in terms of moving up through a biotech company). Undergrad biology degrees are not really useful for earning lots of money after graduation, but they are immensely useful for a career in science.
If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely pick biology as a major again, but I would specialize in molecular biology (something that wasn't available when I attended this university). I would also double major in something like finance or business, as well, because so many scientists don't have very good training in the business side of things. |
