My advise would be to maintain passionate enthusiasm for your choice. There will ALWAYS be someone who is willing to step all over you in order to get more air-time if you show any weakness. Yes - I would recommend studying this and if I had to to it again, I'd would still choose this major. The only thing different I would do would be to not rush through it so quickly and savor the different aspects of the degree field. The "pros" of this degree are that there are many, many career opportunities and I think there is a huge potential for this field to grow. There are also many aspects of this field (most of them needing creative people). The "cons" I see would be that there are so many people entering this field and a large number of them are very cut-throat.
If you are thinking about a career in Broadcasting, be ready to do alot of interning and working w/o pay. It is a fun and exciting career, but I would advise you to not just concentrate on broadcasting, but develop your skills and education in other areas of communications as well.
I would not recommend studying tv/film unless you want to live in LA, because it is very difficult to get a job in media anywhere else, so the degree is very hard to use. Also, it takes a lot of hard work to produce films/television, so it is not as easy of a major as it sounds. But on the upside, it's fun to study.
This is a great skill to have for other jobs besides journalism jobs. Adhering to deadlines, getting information, figuring out puzzles in human nature are all great skills that are honed by this degree.
If you are studying this major make sure you are able to narrow down you field at some point early on. It is a very interesting major and can lead to to many different careers and I would definetely recommend studing Communications. If I had to do it over I would have taken Zoology because communications was my safety and my passion was with animals. Don't go for your safety, go with your heart and you will never be disappointed. The pros are it is a fun and exciting and the teachers are usually enthuiastic. The cons, well it is a very general major so I would suggest to narow in on one or two aspects and go with that.
Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication, Other:
By being a public relations major and marketing minor, I avoided all the business classes that no one wants to take. I didn't have to take management, statistics, etc. My classes were more communication focused which is better for the real world. I will probably never use statistics in my career. I would recommend this major because it can be transferred into different career paths. It is not too focused but more focused on communication and image so that you can use it for other fields as well. I would choose it if I had to do it over again. I gained valuable public speaking skills that are great for any career
