The major I had was actually software engineering with a computer security emphasis rather than regular computer science. I highly recommend studying security as it's a huge industry and a lot of fun to work in. Be sure to choose programs of study carefully. I must say though that it's not an area to study if you don't have a passion for security; the weak don't survive.

  Computer Technology / Computer Systems Technology:

I have been able to apply the majority of the information learned from the courses associated with this major. The broad range of technology covered allows the student the ability to branch off into many different paths from Hardware, Software, Networking, Telecommunications, Applications Development and Programming, and specialized certifications with all of the major manufacturers including Cisco, Microsoft, Novell, Linux and CompTIA. These certifications along with the degree has a major impact on your career pursuit in the real world, and believe me from experience, the certifications WILL increase your net worth to the company interested in you, which will increase YOUR net worth, monetarily. The only downfall to this is the certifications and the studying do not stop after you earn your degree. Staying on top of the tech industry is a constant learning process, therefore if you don't like reading continually, then choose another path! On the other hand, the industry is so explosive and so wide open, you can work in virtually any location and any industry. Every Industry from the Corporate level down, needs IT support.

If you enjoy programming Computer Science can be a great major. Jobs for computer science majors pay well. However, if you like to work with people you should consider a different major.

  Computer Science:

This is a great major for problem solvers. Be warned, however, that many computer science academic programs require a large amount of mathematics - more than you'll ever use in the real world unless you get a PhD in computer science, engineering or a physical science. However, theoretical computer science programs are much better than applied programs that teach specific technologies which become obsolete much quicker.

  Information Technology:

The upside of this major is you have a lot of group work and that makes it easier to get through. Personally when I was toward the end I had to write a code and had no idea how much I would hate writing code until I was almost done with the major. Also, the real downside is what you learn is obsolete by the time you are graduating because of the speed of the industry. Maybe getting a business degree and some technical certifications might be a good alternative to an IT degree. This degree is very expensive for what you get.

It is very fun learning how to build and repair PCs, I have always had a nack for it in high school and I learned most of my stuff there, but of course you have to go to college to prove to people that you know it all.

I found this major to be extremely rewarding! I really enjoy the work that I do on a day to day basis and the compensation that I receive. Be ready for more math than you may have planned, math might not seem like an important part of IT but it is.

Computer science is a very demanding field of study. The kind of work that people do after graduating in computer science are very challenging and stimulating. I would advice to the people who are considering computer science as major to concentrate on the core courses like logic, programming, operating systems, networking, algorithm, data structures and computer architecture. If you are clear with the basic building blocks then you can face the challenges that come as complex problems. It is really exciting to break the complex problem into smaller and logical task and finish it. I would highly recommend studying this course as this course is logical, mathematical, practical as well as theoretical. So you can specialize as per your interest later. I am considering taking computer science in my masters also as I feel very passionate about this field. I, for that matter see more advantage in doing computer science as a major. The foremost is getting a lucrative job after graduation. Then comes working with the most of talented colleagues in the company. Lots of avenues to increase the knowledge. You can get excited by implementing something that has the potential to change the way people live or work or play in this world. The only disadvantage I can see is that you need to put in much more effort than other majors, but then you deserve it!!

  Computer Science:

I enjoyed how there were few papers that I had to write for classes that I took for this major, how it was technical, and how it used numbers. The degree has been helpful in my career - with it I can get computer jobs, and I'd still study it again. My tips or advice would be not to expect to use any of the things you learn about for a job because the job would use different technologies. I would reccomend studying this because it's better then other majors where you have to write many papers. If I had to do it over again I would still choose this major. The pros are the projects are easy to figure out but the cons are that you wouldn't make any projects like that for a job - they would be completely different.

Yes i have an advice for beginners that before starting this course you should be acquainted with basic computer knowledge.

I would recommend studying this as it has good scope and also offers good salary.

Yes i would choose this career again and again.

The pros are that you are paid well,the working hours are flexible and the growth this field offers is good.
The cons are that one should have good technical knowledge otherwise this field is not suitable for those who have only managerial skills and no technical knowledge.

Now is the time to take CS. The demand is growing. I would do it all over again if I had the chance. It has been a wonderful career for me - I have been in it for more than 40 years and have not regretted a minute.

My choice of computer programming has helped me a lot in building career in Information Technology Industry.Knowing about programming helps me to understand about the internals of the systems.It develops a logical frame of mind where anyone can apply anywhere, such as organizing work at office,doing a task step by step and checking at every step.

Don't choose this major. Nobody knows what it entails, and thus can't teach it. This major is too broad, and everyone teaches something else. You're wasting your money and four years of your time if you go for this degree. Don't be a fool like I did--you'll never find a job with a BS in IT.

pros: very well grounded in theoretical computer science. generalized knowledge which can be used for many specific task. For instance, understanding how computer languages work in general will help you learn a specific language as necessary. cons: due to the theoretical nature of computer science, if all you want to do is build or program a computer, you may want to consider computer engineering or computer information systems. However, if you want to understand how and why computers work, and what they are capable of, computer science is for you.

People should consider this major, if they want to pursue their career in the field of Information Technology and Computer Science. As today business of this field is growing very fast and everyone want to make some good money.   Computer Programming, Specific Applications:

You need to be flexible and know different languages. You have to have a desire to know this. You can't think it sounds "cool" you need to want to learn programming. I took basic classes in HS and enjoyed them that is why I chose to continue.
