Telecommunications Technology / Technician:
There are many opportunities here, many of the people in this field are like myself, boomers, who will be retiring in the near future, and are not being replaced. The incoming crowd are heavily focused on what I call the IT realm, how to build web sites, run computer systems, telecommunications which includes video, voice and data has a lot to offer to someone who takes the time to learn the different technologies. It is not a stagnant field, as it is evolving constantly and there is a dire need for folks who know how to make it work. |

Civil Engineering, Other:
My undergraduate major was civil engineering with an environmental emphasis.
My first question about this field of engineering was what exactly does it entail? I think the term evnironmental is very loosely thrown around these days, so I want to be sure you know what you are getting into. Environmental Engineering is really civil engineering with less of an emphasis on surveying/material identification/structures and a greater emphasis on sustainability, accountability, and resource management.
So before you decide to accept this career venture, or any venture really, please understand that you will still need to know most of what civil engineering entails. This includes business management, computer skills, surveying, mechanics, geotech, structures, and other course work covered by the university. So yes, a bachelor of science from a university is going to be required to follow this career path. Furthermore, note that I never mentioned the pursuit of environmental directives. To put it simply, envornmental engineering is not about saving treefrogs or fairy shrimp. Instead, I am concentrating on solving needless waste and lowering the impact upon the environment toward long term goals of well-being for my clients.
I recommend this career for someone who will put time and effort into studying math and science principles for at least 4 years. It really isn't for everyone, but if you have to choose an engineering majot, then civil is the way to go. Once you make it thru the first two years (designed to make students fail), then bam, the coursework becomes more familiar, and so do your classmates. The civil students always had access to the mechanical workshop, the concrete studio, computer labs, and all sorts of places to hang out and rave! I don't know why, but the civil majors always brought out the best in people for parties, studying, and mischief. Our student coordinator already keeps a list of blacklisted hotels that won't let our group back during the ACSE conferences. :)
The pros of this major are that yuo will have a high paying job ready and waiting when you graduate. A con is that it takes 4-6 years to graduate!
Another con is the lake of social life for the first two years of school, the pro is finding a new group of friends known as civil engineers!
I wouldn't hesitate about retaking this major. I am enjoying every point of this job! |

Mechanical Engineering:
Educational Challenges:
-4-Year Bachelor of Science degree.
-VERY math & physics intensive. If you don't like math now, you're gonna Hate Engineering!
-Also requires calculus, statistics, chemistry, programming language, thermodynamics.. and that's just in the first 2 Years!
-Last 2 years are more specialized to field, ie: mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil engineering, etc.
-Engineering program isn't as fun/popular as say Management, Art, etc. Engineering has lots of geeks, and it's much harder to find a date or have fun!
Job Prospects:
-Starting salaries aren't that high.. $35-40K + benefits for junior/apprentice engineering positions, depending on local area/sector.
-Promotions are slow, and usually require vacancies of old higher positions.
Growth:
-Most highly paid engineers have risen to Management positions with a secondary Masters in Business Administration degree.
-Even with high technical skills, sometimes it's not What you know but Who you know!
-Communication/Leadership/Marketing skills are still key to further growth in the Engineering profession! |

Industrial Engineering:
Industrial engineering majors should like to combine technical problem solving with people skills. I would definitely choose the BS in industrial engineering again. It is a great major, since industrial engineering pays well, is flexible, changes with the times, and the various jobs are very interesting. Industrial engineers work in banks, hospitals, automobile assembly plants, NASA, schools, and universities. |
