Psychology, General:
Those considering this major should have an interest in many areas of psychology, including analysis, research and counseling. This major usually requires additional work after the bachelor's level (Masters, Ph.D) to train for a specific sub-careers. Without further training, many psychology majors are unable to find related jobs or advance in the field. Most importantly, take the study of this field seriously. If your grades are not consistently superior, you will find that you are unable to attain acceptance into graduate programs and will therefore be at a distinct disadvantage in terms of pay and job prospects.
I would recommend studying psychology, but only if that is the true passion of the student. Those who are simply interested in popular subcategories, such as personality or deviance should take a specific college course but declare another major.
I would study psychology again, although I would likely have specialized in a more lucrative field, such as industrial or business psychology. Those interested in counseling and criminal psychology face fierce competition for jobs and graduate opportunities.
The pros of this major are that it is often very interesting and has a myriad of different subfields to study.
The cons of this major are the lack of jobs at the bachelor's level, the low pay in the field, the incredible competition for graduate level study and related jobs, and the difficulty in being taken as a serious student. Oftentimes, people view the major as an "easy" one, when in reality it is complex and competitive for serious students.

Cognitive Psychology and Psycholinguistics:
If the idea of learning how language operates in the mind and allows us to express our thoughts, linguistics might be a major for you. From that description I'm sure you can tell the field is rather philosophically oriented rather than having a clear practical end, you need to be driven by a love for the subject rather than financial reward if you choose to major in it. Though analyzing the organization of language has been studied for centuries the current field is deeply shaped by Chomsky's theory of universal grammar. This perspective essentially boils down to the idea that language is genetically structured system that provides underlying principles that governs how language is produced. Chomsky's ideas are still controversial to a degree but this focus on language as an internal mental system rather than a cultural artifact has deeply marked the field and lead to a great deal of fruitful research (in 2002, for example, a gene was discovered that influences language acquisition). Linguists themselves primarily study language structures comparatively and try to deduce principles of its organization such as X-bar theory and generative phonology. Increasingly the field is being merged with psychology and neuroscience to increase its empirical scope and integrate its theory with the what we know about how the brain is organized (an excellent popularizer of this approach is Steven Pinker who has written about linguistics and psycholinguistics for a general audience). Broadly, aspects of the field touch on areas of philosophy, history, and culture so it is quite interdiscplinary. I think linguistics is a good major for anyone who enjoys logical analysis, psychology, and language and especially good subject to integrate in to a broader cognitive science major. |
