  Psychopharmacology:

The study of the brain is incredibly important and extremely interesting. This is a constantly changing field and to have your foot in it will allow you to be a witness to the many advances to come in the future. I absolutely recommend studying this field and if I had to do it again I would have decided earlier in my college career to pursue ti so I could learn even more. Pros: be a part of an ever changing field, psychology with a lot of science back ground so there are definite answers. Cons: a lot of work and difficult ideas to grasp.

  Educational Psychology:

Psychology will give you a great foundation. However, a degree in Psychology is not a guarantee of a great job. It's important to decide whether or not you will pursue a graduate degree after you get your bachelors. If you are considering graduate school then it's very important to get internships and work on research projects. The more you build up your Vitae the greater chance you have of having a satifying career.

This is a major really requires that you get your Ph.D Although fascinating, when faced with the reality of having to deal with people's problems on a daily basis, you must be sure you are really equipped to deal with this. If I had to do all over I would not have selected this major. At 18, I was merely interested but I didn't consider job realities.

Check on whether your program is more science based or socially based. Also be aware that jobs are very slim with just a Bachelor Degree. If you want to make good money you will need a Graduate education.

I would suggest getting a psych major along with a minor. Unless you are going on to grad school right away I feel it is necessary to have a background in other areas, in addition to psychology. I had a minor in human resource management. In my current position as a HR/Benefits Representative I have found both my psychology and HR degrees very helpful. I think any time that you can make your self more marketable to multiple fields is best. Since I didn't want to go on to grad school I knew it was necessary for me to get involved in other fields that I was interested in. In my situation HR and Psychology had many overlapping principles and had multiple applications. I think one of the major cons is that my professors stressed and focused more on going to grad school than just going on with a BA. I think there are many possibilities out there with a BA in psychology, just not as many if you had a masters or a doctorate. If you don't want to have to be creative in your job search than grad school is the way to go.

  Psychology, Other:

While Psych may seem like a "soft" science, I've found that I apply things I learned in the major to nearly every aspect of my life. I minored in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and became a Chemical Dependency Counselor, a field in which I worked only a short time before returning to the Info Tech field. In general, Psych is a degree that absolutely requires Graduate study to have any credibility. In order to practice to any degree, you must continue on with Masters, PsyD, or preferably PhD certification, or use it as a jumping off point for another area of interest. That being said, a Psych degree is probably one of the broadest, most useful of all degrees for general life. It is used in absolutely everything we do, and having a better grasp of mental processes, decision making, coping skills, psychobiology and abnormal psychology makes nearly any job easier. As a Systems Administrator, customer service skills are critical, and my track record for customer satisfaction has far exceeded that of my co-workers who majored in IT or Computer Science. Bottom line, either get your PhD and become a Psychologist, or use Psych as a general major to get out of college and on with life, then use the skills you've learned to excel in any field.

I changed my major in my freshman year of college to Psychology because it was interesting. I enjoyed learning about psychology but it never really dawned on me that the purpose of a major is choosing a career path. I think I though that psychology was going to leave me with a lot of options to choose from but having only a BA limits a graduate to few careers choices, none of which are as interesting as the professors made it out to be.

I would take a long hard look at what your actual career path is going to be after you graduate before choosing psyhology as a major.

I would not choose psychology again as a major. I am currently going back to school to earn a second, and hopefully more valuable degree in accounting.

I think this is a very interesting major. It can be used in all fields of employment, from clinical psychology to customer service. I do not think I would enjoy any other field and am glad I chose to do it. The cons of this degree are that this is a very theory based field so if you are a factual person, this is probably not the best field of study for you.

I really liked all of my psychology classes that I took throughout my college career. I would definately recommend this major for those who are genuinely interested in psychology. If I had to repeat college, I would definately choose psychology as my major again. There are many pros and cons of choosing this major. I think the biggest con is that to do anything in a field related to psychology in the smallest sense of the major, you have to go to graduate school. Upon graduation as an undergraduate, there are very few jobs avaialable where you will actually be hired for your psychology degree. The major pro of this major is that you will learn a lot about people and how everyone in society interacts with each other, which can benefit you in any job situation. I would definately warn against choosing this major as an "easy" option, because in reality, classes require a lot of work and dedication.

  Clinical Child Psychology:

This is a very rewarding major for those truly willing to work with troubled youth. It is rewarding to see the children look forward to seeing you each time, and it is a truly excellent feeling to know that you're helping him or her. However, it is not a career for the weak...there is much patient required in a child psychology career. You are working with children from a wide variety of backgrounds...and it is a crushing feeling to see and hear the stories behind each face.
I would do it all over again, however. I love this profession. This is a profession that is in demand at the moment, as more and more kids are coming from troubled and broken homes. However, you must have extreme patience and a great ability to both distance yourself from getting to involved, and listen and genuinely care. It is sometimes a difficult balance to find, but the success you feel is very, very rewarding.

Don't do it! It's a very interesting major, which is my reasoning behind feeling somewhat positive about it. I was never bored in classes, nor did I ever dread going. However, I would not choose this major again if I could do things all over. Not only is it difficult finding work, but the careers that are available tend to be very low pay and very depressing. The only way to earn a decent living is to continue by getting at least a Master's degree. However, if someone is seeking a major that will prevent them from dropping out or failing due to boredom, I would suggest it.

  Counseling Psychology:

Social work is similar to psych - but different. You need your masters to be a counselor. The pay is not very good starting with a masters 30's - on the low end. Most of the time people do not listen and keep on doing what they are doing. School was not good - it is difficult to teach someone how to listen. Theory is only words.

I enjoyed the classes, however, it was never really made clear to me that there isn't much out there in the psychology field with only a bachelor's degree. What you learn will be helpful in other fields, but if you are set on a job in psychology, be prepared for a lot more schooling.

  Clinical Child Psychology:

This major requires a strong dedication to academic excellence. I would recommend this field of study to people who are willing to put in the effort and time to study and learn large quanities of information. If I had it to do over, I would definitely choose this major again. The pros of this major is that I can work in the field of study that I love. The cons are that there is a lot of information to learn and digest, and many people enter this field of study simply because they love children or want to help them without realizing the incredible amount of work involved in the program of study.

If you are considering a Psychology major you need to be prepared to continue your education beyond a bachelors degree. At the very least you will need a masters degree to be successful in this field. I stopped with a bachelors degree and now regret it. I did enjoy my classes, but if I had to do it all again I would probably choose to be a Business major. You can get out into the work force and earn a living and support a family much quicker with a Business major. A big con for me is that it is hard to get a job in the field of Psychology that pays well with only a bachelors degree. You need to do an internship or find another way into the field if you do not continue your education. Sometimes when people meet you and they find out that you majored in Psychology, they become very wary and are not as open. The pros for having a degree in Psychology is that you have a broad base of knowledge. You can decide to be more specialized within the realm of Psychology or you can use it to your benefit in many other fields as well. You can also use the theories that you learned for self improvement.

Wonderful, if you are interested in psychology. BA is not very useful in psych. field unfortunatley, but useful in various disciplines.

I am very happy with my psychology degree, even though I am not specifically working in the psychology field. Through studying psychology, you get the tools to see how and why people act the way they do in a variety of situations and stages.

If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely choose this major. I now run my own dog training business and I feel that my degree helps me to relate and understand people than I would without my degree. The negative about a psychology degree is that, if you want to work within the Psychology field, you can do very little with only a B.A.
