Communication Studies / Speech Communication and Rhetoric:
One of the most versatile degrees available--can use in business, public relations, education, ministry, politics, law, not-for-profit work, etc. Challenging curriculum (if you're in a solid Communication Department), so play close attention during the fundamentals course--particularly related to theory. Yes, I'd choose this major again. |

Communication and Media Studies, Other:
If I had to do it over again, I would certainly obtain my BA in Communications again. I had the opportunity to learn about various interrelated subjects, such as journalism, public relations, group communications, rhetoric, film theory as well as television and video production. This wide range of subjects allowed me to consider entering multiple fields upon graduation, as well as gave me the opportunity to "try on" different careers before I graduated. Also, I find that a Communications degree allows for more options after graduation, including pursuing graduate studies. The cons of this degree is that, without solid experience through internships, co-ops, clubs, activities or work study during your university years, one may find upon receiving a Communications degree that you are not qualified to specialize in a field because of the broad and general nature of the degree, the diploma itself may be seen as just a piece of paper, unless you pursue outside opportunities while studying. |

Communication Studies / Speech Communication and Rhetoric:
I loved the classes I took while finishing my Communications degree at the University of San Francisco. Classes included Public Speaking, Public Relations, Philosophy, etc.
This degree is good for outgoing, personable people. It does require a person to be a skilled writer. You must be able to write speeches, press releases, etc. An English minor would be very helpful.
This is a versatile major, which will allow you to work in fields such as public relations, human resources, advertising, fund raising, recruiting, etc., but it does not give you an automatic job guarantee as some degrees do, such as accounting.
In prosperous times, Communication majors can be in demand, but when the economy takes a hit, so do most communication jobs. They are usually the first to be cut, unless you have seniority or other skills that can translate to different departments or areas. Starting pay is pretty low, even in major cities, around 35k per year.
A Communications degree is one of the most fun degrees to complete, but if I were to do it over, I would probably graduate with a degree in Business, which would be more applicable to more industries & job opportunities. |

Journalism:
I would advise students in this major to become greatly involved in any student publications. Joining the campus newspaper or magazine will give you a great hands-on experience and is a great resume and portfolio builder. I would recommend studying this field, but would warn that finding a job in this field post-graduation can be quite difficult, especially if you have a narrowed-down area of writing. If I had to do it over again, I would, mainly because I love what I do and am very good at it. The pros of having a degree in this major are that once you find work, it is satisfying seeing your words in print and knowing that people are learning from what you took the time to research, interview, and report. The cons of a degree in this major are, like previously mentioned, that jobs are few and far between. Additionally, the jobs associated with this field are not known to be of the best-paying. |
