  Sociology:

I love the sociology major. I find everything that I have learned about fascinating, especially sociology of the family and sociology of sexual behavior. Currently I am formulating my own research project and will get to conduct my own survey and analyze data. While it can be tedious te end result is fascinating. If I had it to do over again I would definitely still choose this major. Pros of this major are that you can do mostly anything with it, from research to social work, guidance counseling, etc. Cons are that a lot of times when I am asked what I am majoring in and I reply sociology, people ask what I'm planning to do with my life in a disgruntled tone.

  Sociology:

I really loved my major, even though I do not plan on having a job in the field. It's almost a cross between anthropology and psychology, a lot of very interesting classes on why people and groups do what they do. It's not fluff, but it's usually interesting enough to be worth what work there is.

This is a good major to start off with. One can enter any number of social service professions while working on a masters, or with careful choice of classes expand to other dimensions of sociology. Personally, I've worked for a non-profit agency, serving persons with disabilities, as well as translated my degree into working for an advertising agency. This is because, no matter what you do, you need to understand people - either the people you work with, or the people you're looking to address. What better way to do that than with a Sociology degree?

A degree in Sociology does not specifically and directly prepare the student for any particular career field. However, it does provide a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that are applicable and useful in a wide variety of career choices.

An undergraduate degree in this major provides the student with basic knowledge of how groups of individuals interact in a variety of situations. Individual classes will provide students with knowledge on how groups behave in normal and aberant manners as well as how societies respond to these actions. Such knowledge is useful when dealing with any groups of people in a career and can, to some degree, predict social responses.
Using sociological knowledge in this manner provides a paradigm for the student to view the larger world, allowing them to recognize complex patterns.

Anyone wishing to pursue a degree in Sociology should be prepared to understand and extrapolate on complex theories of social behavior. They should also possess a strong foundation in mathematics as statistical analysis is a key component to understanding societies. Finally, the perspective student should be prepared to be exposed to a wide range of diverse topics, requiring intellectual flexibility.

My degree consisted of a mix of psychology, political science, sociology, history, anthropology, and criminal justice courses. The pros are that you can pick a wide mix of things you find interesting and can usually find many classes open, allowing you to finish your degree on time. The cons are that some schools force you to pick one area of specialization where you might have to take 18 credits in one area, but overall it's relatively painless. The biggest tip I can give is to try to get your lower level courses out of the way with credit by exam like CLEP or DANTES tests. You just take a multiple choice test and if you pass, the course appears as complete on your transcript. Just go online and buy a textbook from a few years ago and you'll have no problems. For a social science major, you can test out of Intro Sociology, General Psychology, Lifespan Psychology, Counseling, Anthropology, American History I & II, Western Civilization I & II, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and others. I HIGHLY recommend it - it'll shave thousands of dollars off your bill and months off the time needed to graduate.

I HAD A WONDERFUL TIME STUDYING SOCIOLOGY WHICH CAME NATURALLY TO ME. SO OFTEN A THEORY WOULD COME UP AND I'D THINK "WELL, YEAH." IF YOU STUDY THIS MAJOR YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THAT ITS BASIS IS ON THE THEORIES THAT WE ARE DEFINED BY OUR SURROUNDINGS. GENERALLY IS YOUR LIKE SOCIOLOGY OR PSYCHOLOGY, IN WHICH WE DEFINE OURSELVES, YOU WILL DISLIKE TH EOTHER. I WOULD CHOOSE THIS MAJOR AGAIN. HOWEVER, IT IS A BIT ABSTRACT IN THE WORKPLACE. I'D FOCUS ON RESEARCH TO GET INTO MARKET RESEARCH.

While this major is extremely interesting and insightful I found that it help very little finding a job in the "Real World". I don't regret taking any of my classes though as it has helped shaped the way I view society in general.

 The science of sociology promotes a better understanding of the human condition through the study of social constructions beyond the individual level. The study of the nature of culture, social interaction, social groups, social institutions, social change and social problems are utilized in many different types of jobs, so it is a good subject to study.

I think you really need to do your research on the school you wish to attend. I attend Suffolk University which is a great school for Sociology and wonderful for my concentration of Criminology and Law. I think it is important to remember that if one choses this major they need to understand that if they do not have a set plan it is hard to find a competitive job.

Do not pursue this major if you intend to work after college. It does not prepare you for any particular job and you graduate with a degree and no skills.

If I had it to do over again, I would have pursued a more marketable degree.

Pros of this degree: You have a degree. It's interesting to learn about people, their behavior, cultural differences, etc. Somewhat helpful in working with people and accepting differences.

Cons of this degree: No marketable skills at graduation.

Sociology is a great major of you're not lokoing for a major that leads to a line of emplyment, but instead you're looking for a major that stretches your mind and teaches you to think. If you're looking for money, or a direct link between your education and you career, I'd direct you to the hard sciences or computers. Sociology teaches you how people work, and teaches you how to think - both of which are applicable, although not directly, to any career. I also took this major because I didn't know what career field I was interested in at the time, and I would suggest it to others in that situation.

This major had pretty interesting classes but you have to write a lot of papers. It's definately hard to get a job after you graduate. Unless you plan to get a PhD, you might do something more marketable and minor in soc. If you really want to major in it, I would suggest taking the B.S. path to help your job options when you are done.

Sociology is a field of study that incorporates the study of social interactions among groups in different societies. It is intense; much attention is given to statistical study, casework and interviewing, field study and a lot of diligent reading. If you are to consider this field, be aware that the terminal degree that will get you anywhere is the Ph.D. The B.A can prepare you for some work in the areas of Human Services and Education, but those are fewer, given preference to Social Work and Counseling. If you are considering a profession in those areas, sociology is a field that will give you a solid background. I would major in Sociology again and certainly would have taken more research opportunities.

I studied Criminal Justice, and found it very interesting and rewarding. It enabled me access to many interesting aspects of life, and prepared me for several career opportunities. I do recommend studying this area, as there are always job opportunities in the legal area for CJ majors. I might chose this major again, but my interests have changed and I might also change majors at this time.
Pros--the knowledge of how our justice system works; the degree got me several jobs related to the CJ field
cons--can't think of any.

This is a good general major, but actuaally applying it to a "real world" job is somewhat ambiguous and broad. While on the one hand you are generally qualified to do many things, the lack of specificity will make it hard to choose a specific job. Basically, you have a 4-year degree in a field oriented to social services and would need more education and/or training to develop a career. GOOD LUCK!!
